The Nurturenature garden enjoyed a very special afternoon yesterday with the wonderful Jackie Kay, award winning poet, novelist and playwright. There were two “sittings” as we had been oversubscribed for the first and it was a truly magical experience. The rain held off for the 2 o’clock session but we were treated to a downpour for the second session. However it was just as good as the first session enhanced by the very English sound of rain on a tent roof. The gazebo kept the rain out and Jackie could be heard well despite the sound of the rain. We were treated to a selection of Jackie’s poems in both sessions including requests from the audience and then Jackie answered questions about her poetry writing. It was a real privilege to have such an amazing poet and person in the Nurturenature garden and I hope it is the sort of event we are able to repeat. If we are really lucky we might even have Jackie back. She was very positive about doing the reading in such a special setting which she described as “spectacular”. It raised much needed funds for Nurturenature and everyone who was there was hugely positive about the afternoon and felt they had been part of something really special. The garden was looking beautiful and made the whole thing more extraordinary – all in all a really exceptional afternoon and something I will remember for a long time.
